Seven of the Most Amazing Hiking Destinations in Italy

7. Alta Via of Italy #2 (Gran Paradiso Section)

Hiking Italy, Alta Via of Italy #2 Gran Paradiso Section
Although Alta Via #2 stretches all the way across the north of Italy from east to west, the section running from Courmayeur to Donnas is particularly unmissable and offers something a bit different to the other entries on our list. The highlights of this destination/trail are undoubtedly the views of Mont Blanc, Gran Paradiso and the other giants of Gran Paradiso National Park and Mont Avic Regional Park. While gentler than many of the treks in the Dolomites and elsewhere, this trail peaks at a mighty 3,300m/10,827ft and is still very challenging (4900m/16,076ft of ascent is no cake-walk!). The ascent to Col Lauson and the subsequent traverse are particularly breathtaking (literally and figuratively) and the variety of terrain – from epic, glaciated mountains to tranquil alpine valleys and villages – will keep you constantly enthralled!

Pros

  • Wildlife – eagles, marmots, ibex and chamois are everywhere! If you’re lucky, you might even spot a lynx or wolf.
  • Views of Gran Paradiso and Monte Bianco, two of Europe’s highest and most impressive peaks
  • Passes through Gran Paradiso National Park and Mont Avic Regional Park
  • Challenging total elevation gain (4,900m/16,076ft)

Now…it’s decision time! Whichever destination in the ‘bel paese’ you choose, however, we’re sure you won’t regret it. For those of you with a bit more time on your hands, moreover, in all likelihood the above options list will soon become an excellent Italian-adventure bucket list.
